WiFi in Schools

There is a growing concern in North America regarding the health hazards of WiFi technology in general and in schools specifically. Una St. Clair the executive director of Citizens for Safe Technology has been busy giving workshops, lectures and seminars on the topic. She is currently called to attend a Parliamentary Committee on the issues surrounding wireless technology.

The problem she brings to our attention is the high levels of non-thermal radiation emitted by these devices. Studies in other jurisdictions around the world, have set the bar considerably lower than Canada or the US. The standards for Canada and the USA are known to cause considerable health problems including tumors, cancer, sleep disturbances and genetic breaks. The problems are magnified in children as they are smaller and their bodies more susceptible to the influence of non-thermal radiation and electromagnetic forces. What also causes a layering effect are the use of multiple devices available in the school. WiFi systems produce and continued exposure to these forces. Coupled with cell phones, iPods, laptops etc, the magnitude of influence is increased.

This group is not anti-technology, but for safe technology. Jurisdictions like Toronto and Colwod city councils have issued proclamations warning of the dangers of WiFi technology. Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Great Britain and other European countries are working with industry to produce safe technology. Health warnings are prevalent for cell phone use for kids and pregnant women. Many European jurisdictions have removed WiFi technology from schools and moved to hardwired systems of computers.

The Citizens for Safe Technology have just launched a Wi-Fi petition on their website – http://www.citizensforsafetechnology.org – please do take this opportunity to express your concern by signing and passing it along. They would like as many signatures as possible before the end of October to take to Parliament.
